Parkinson Speech Therapy Program
Astonishingly, 90% of people with Parkinson’s are at risk of developing a weak voice that can lead to serious speech and swallowing difficulties.
The SPEAK OUT!® program incorporates speech, voice, and cognitive exercises while focusing on the use of intent to change speech from an automatic to an intentional function. Following individual therapy, individuals may transition to the group therapy program for maintenance of skills.
The LOUD Crowd® is a group therapy program where the clients practice carryover of their SPEAK OUT!® exercises in an effort to speak with intent in the context of functional communication activities.
Research has shown that these two programs have yielded improvements in patients’ intensity levels/perceived loudness, articulation precision, quality of vowels, and prosody/intonation. Post treatment, studies have also found that these programs are highly effective in changing the patients’ quality of life as it increases intent and improves their perception of their own voices.Â
BHSC speech-language pathologist, Amy Stohl, MA, CCC-SLP, has been certified by the Parkinson Voice Project (a 501c3 Not For Profit) to provide the SPEAK OUT!® and LOUD Crowd® programs.
If you or someone you know could benefit from this program, please feel free to contact the office at (716) 204-8680 or you can email Amy Stohl at [email protected] with any questions.Â
