Who is a Candidate?

Children (at least nine months old) and adults may benefit from a cochlear implant, whether hearing loss began at birth or gradually with age. Implant candidates are referred to BHSC for a comprehensive cochlear implant evaluation. Potential candidates undergo a complete audiological evaluation to confirm hearing loss. All candidates must have worn hearing aids for at least 6 months prior to the evaluation.

Several determining factors for implant candidates are:

A moderately-severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss
Limited or no benefit from the use of hearing aids
Have a positive attitude and motivation to hear
