The focus of the Listening and Spoken Language Program at Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center is to teach children with hearing loss age-appropriate language skills using The Listening and Spoken Language approach. Using this approach makes mainstreaming into a district classroom a realistic option.
The Listening and Spoken Language Program at BHSC is dedicated to teaching children with hearing loss how to listen and speak, with the ultimate goal of preparing them for successful integration into mainstream educational settings once they have developed the necessary spoken language skills.
Each child receives intensive therapy sessions tailored to their individual language goals within a structured five-hour school day. To support spoken language proficiency, children participate in small-group sessions focused on targeted listening and language instruction. The remainder of the day is spent in a classroom environment that mirrors a typical early childhood or preschool setting, fostering social and developmental growth alongside language learning.
Parents play a crucial role in their child’s success within the program. To empower families, we offer parent training sessions designed to help parents better understand deafness and actively participate in their child’s educational journey.
