For many years, hearing was viewed simply as a function of the ear. But over the last decade, there has been a significant shift in understanding—hearing health is closely connected to brain health.

When hearing loss is present, the brain must work harder to process sound. This added strain, known as cognitive load, can make it more difficult to understand, retain, and respond to information. Over time, this can contribute to increased cognitive fatigue and may intensify symptoms for individuals with conditions such as dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

Research continues to show a strong link between hearing and cognition. In some cases, properly fitted hearing aids have been associated with improved communication and more manageable cognitive symptoms. By improving access to sound, hearing aids can help reduce cognitive load and support overall brain function.

At Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center, patients have access to tools like Cognivue screening, a quick, non-invasive assessment that evaluates areas such as memory, processing speed, executive function, and reaction time. This helps clinicians better understand each patient’s unique needs.

In addition, Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) play a key role in supporting individuals with cognitive challenges. Whether someone has experienced a stroke or is living with mild cognitive impairment, SLPs can help strengthen communication skills and provide strategies to support memory, daily routines, and overall independence.

It’s natural to have questions after a diagnosis – but you don’t have to navigate it alone. With a collaborative team of audiologists and speech-language pathologists, BHSC works with each individual to create a personalized care plan.
