Audiological Evaluation

A number of tests are available to evaluate the type and degree of hearing loss, as well as determine the appropriate treatment. The most common hearing test is the audiological evaluation or audiogram.

During this evaluation you will be placed in a sound treated test booth. You will wear earphones and listen to sounds at various pitches (frequencies) and loudness levels (intensity). The audiologist will record the softest sound that you can hear at each frequency. Hearing loss is seldom equal among all frequencies. People with hearing loss often lose the highest frequencies first.

Hearing Aid Evaluation

Based on the results of your Audiological Evaluation, it may be recommended for you to also have a Hearing Aid Evaluation. This will provide an opportunity for our audiologist to assess the level of impact your hearing difficulties have on your life and the lives of your family, as well as gather further information regarding symptoms you may be experiencing.

View Hearing Aids

If your Hearing Aid Evaluation reveals a permanent hearing loss, a hearing aid may be recommended for one or both ears. Your audiologist will discuss your specific hearing test results and how a hearing aid can help you. During this appointment, you will be able to see and touch different styles of hearing aids, which will help you choose the best hearing aid style and features based on your degree of hearing loss, lifestyle, and financial circumstances.

While your audiologist is there to assist you and answer your questions, the final decision on which hearing aid to purchase is yours.

Hearing Aid Dispense and Fitting

Once you have selected your hearing aids, your audiologist will program them to meet your specific hearing needs. Small changes can be made to the hearing aid at your first fitting if there are things that you feel should be adjusted right away. We may do some testing to make sure the hearing aids are giving you enough sound where you need it.

During this visit, we will explain how to use the hearing aid, how to put it in your ear and remove it, how to change batteries and how to properly care for and clean your new device. We welcome you to bring a family member or friend to participate in this appointment if you would like additional support.

When you put the hearing aids in for the first time, you may have different emotions about the sounds you hear. All these feelings are normal and to be expected. The goal of the hearing aid is to make everyday sounds audible and comfortable, the sounds you hear should be clear and pleasant. Communicating what you hear to your audiologist will help to create the best listening experience with your new hearing aids. Your initial hearing aid fitting is only a starting place; additional changes can be made at future appointments as needed.
