Computer-Based Literacy Program

Language/Literacy Computer Lab

Welcome to the BHSC Literacy Lab!

What is Fast ForWord?

Fast ForWord (FFW) is a series of computer-based reading intervention programs designed for students who are struggling with reading and need to develop the cognitive skills necessary for successful reading and learning. Studies have shown that these series can quickly move students toward grade level in the skills essential to learning to read, helping them achieve gains in as little as 4-12 weeks. Each FFW product accelerates learning by developing and strengthening the cognitive skills of memory, attention, processing, and sequencing (Learning MAPS) that are essential for academic learning and reading success.

Who Does Fast ForWord Help?

The FFW program is recommended for students who:
·         Read below grade level
·         Show little interest in reading
·         Experience difficulty associating letters with sounds
·         Need stronger language or reading skills
·         Speak in simple, short sentences or incomplete sentences
·         Have difficulty communicating and following directions
·         Meet diagnostic criteria for autism, ADD, ADHD, Auditory Processing Disorder
·         Are not achieving their full potential

How Does Fast ForWord Work?

The FFW products actually build the learning capacity of the brain. The program draws on the concept of brain plasticity – the brain changes as we learn new skills. FFS employs the F.A.S.T. Power Learning Formula:
·         Frequency and Intensity: Brain plasticity research shows that completing a set of learning tasks in a frequent, intense time frame accelerates learning. That’s why attendance is so important!
·         Adaptivity: Interactive exercises automatically adapt to individual skill levels and responses.
·         Simultaneous Development: Exercises develop major cognitive and reading skills simultaneously to ensure enduring improvements in learning.
·         Timely Motivation: Tiered rewards designed to maximize motivation.

How Do I Sign Up for Fast ForWord?

What to Expect …

What Will Your Child Be Doing?
Your child will be assigned to one or more FFW products. Each product has five to seven exercises, designed to be implemented on the computer daily for 8 or more minutes each, five days a week. As your child masters exercises, he/she will continue on with other products to target the cognitive exercises they struggled with. The Speech-Language Pathologist in the classroom provides support and intervention to help your child remain focused and progress in the program.

What is YOUR Job?
·         Ensure that your child has a good night’s rest and a healthy meal before attending the program every day.
·         Ensure that your child arrives on time to the Center every day – attendance is VERY important.
·         Communicate with your child’s Speech-Language Pathologist to discuss improvements.
·         Provide support for your child to ensure that he/she stays focused.
·         Learn the names of the games and talk to your child about them.
·         Be enthusiastic! Your child will think FFW is great if you do.
