Buffalo, NY (February 12, 2007 ) – Speech-Language Pathologists at Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center have introduced an additional therapy for treating swallowing disorders using electrical stimulation. This more aggressive treatment, provided by a licensed and specially-certified professional, is called VitalStim. Cleared by the FDA for use in treating swallowing dysfunction, VitalStim uses Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) to stimulate the muscles involved in swallowing. This stimulation strengthens and reeducates muscles to improve motor control of the swallowing mechanism.

With the use of VitalStim, results are typically more dramatic and faster than with traditional therapy alone, reducing complications of swallowing disorders such as aspiration, dehydration, malnutrition, and death. It also has the potential for eliminating the need for alternative methods of nutrition, such as PEG tubes. VitalStim therapy can improve quality of life through enhancing safety, socialization, and pleasure during eating and drinking.
