Special Education Teacher

  

Major Responsibilities
The Preschool Teacher is responsible for designing and implementing individual and group lessons comprised of speech, language and readiness skill tasks to encourage development in these areas by severely speech-language impaired preschoolers. The teacher works as a member of the educational/habilitation team in developing and implementing goals for each child’s Individualized Education Plan.
 
 
Education and experience requirements
 
1.    Bachelor of Science/Arts degree in Special Education with emphasis in the areas of special education and/or deaf and hearing handicapped education preferred.
2.    New York State Certification as a Special Education Teacher in Birth to 2, or Permanent certification in special Education prior to February 1, 2004.
  1. Ability to design and implement lessons (and maintain classroom structure, as appropriate).
  2. Ability to demonstrate flexibility and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure appropriate services.
  3. Sensitivity for confidentiality and the needs of a special population.
  4. Ability to exhibit professional judgment and maturity.
  5. Ability to initiate and maintain positive family relationships.
  6. Strong work ethic
  7. Dependability
